Thanks to a partnership with American Friends of Canadian Conservation (AFCC), you can help Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) protect more of the natural and working lands of the Kawarthas by making a tax-deductible contribution of cash or securities.
KLT creates nature reserves for future generations by acquiring ecologically important properties and/or interests in properties (ex., Conservation Easement Agreements).
You can support KLT via our partnership with American Friends in the following ways:
You can donate online at AFCC’s secure site using your credit card or PayPal. You can make a one-time contribution, or arrange for your donation to recur at any interval convenient for you.
You can donate stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares to AFCC to avoid US capital gains taxes while receiving a tax deduction for the current value of your securities. Contact AFCC staff at 250-688-1508 in Canada, or 360-515-7171 in the US, or [email protected] for instructions.
You can mail a cheque (in US funds) to: American Friends of Canadian Conservation, 336 36th Street #717,
Bellingham, WA 98225, USA.
Please print, fill out, sign, and send a Grant Recommendation with your cheque to request that AFCC uses your donation to make a grant to Kawartha Land Trust. The language in the recommendation is necessary for your gift to be tax deductible in the US.
Alternatively, if you do not require a tax receipt (for example if you are donating from a charitable fund), you can send your gift directly to KLT. This is simple to do and ensures all of your support goes directly to land conservation in the Kawarthas.
American Friends of Canadian Conservation (AFCC) was created to remove the tax and legal barriers that prevented US taxpayers from permanently protecting their Canadian natural lands. Gifts of land and conservation easements (aka covenants, servitudes) to AFCC are charitable donations in the US and effectively not subject to Canadian capital gains. Learn about the bi-national tax incentives by downloading Save Some Green: a handbook for US taxpayers from AFCC’s website.
Kawartha Land Trust would partner with AFCC to complete your conservation gift and would be the local land steward.
Contact KLT at 705-743-5599 or [email protected] to discuss your property and conservation interests, or AFCC’s cross-border conservation experts at 250-688-1508 in Canada, or 360-515-7171 in the US, or [email protected] for information about tax benefits and the procedures for making a land or easement gift.
As a US taxpayer, you can also make a gift of land in your will, or a financial bequest to benefit Kawartha Land Trust.
Most bequests can be made directly to KLT and realize the same estate tax benefits as a gift to a US charity.Â
For more complex estate planning tools, we can partner with American Friends to structure your gift. Please contact John Kintare, Executive Director, [email protected] for more information.
The benefits of making a charitable donation to KLT are countless – you will help protect significant sites throughout the Kawarthas, create corridors for wildlife and increase the number of sites you can access on walking trails, all while saving on your income tax!
Sometimes putting off until tomorrow allows something important never to happen…Once you know about KLT and have the ability to give, you should pursue this worthy organization. Putting off until tomorrow may deprive you of donating to protect your precious land from development, financial advantages, and just the sheer joy of giving. It is never too late to give but today is the best time to start your journey with KLT!
Given the many challenges we now face in responding to climate change, loss of species diversity, and the ever-decreasing number of areas that are left for people to explore the natural world, Kawartha Land Trust serves as a local champion in protecting and conserving natural lands in the Kawarthas for the overall benefit of the community.
It only takes a moment to protect the land you love from development.
Help ensure that natural spaces in the Kawarthas remain so for generations to come.Â
