Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) is a big community of volunteers, donors, staff, and supporters working to conserve the natural and working lands of the Kawarthas. It takes a community of passionate and dedicated people to protect the land we love.

Today, we’d like to introduce you to volunteer Barb Rimmer. If you have attended one of Kawartha Land Trust’s Passport to Nature events recently, chances are that you have met Barb.

Barb’s energy, passion for nature, and dedication to protecting it make her an inspiration to many. She donates her time not only to Kawartha Land Trust but also to a host of other community organizations as well.

Throughout her years of volunteering at KLT, Barb has been involved in stewardship work, including helping to maintain KLT’s public access footpaths for community use.

In the past two years, she has been instrumental in the success of KLT’s Passport to Nature program as one of our volunteer event ambassadors, welcoming attendees to events and sharing her love of nature in the Kawarthas.

Last year, she took her involvement in KLT’s Passport to Nature further by joining KLT’s People and Nature Events Working Group. This working group, which is made up of KLT staff and volunteers, curates events for KLT’s Passport to Nature program. Barb can always be counted on to offer insightful feedback on how to make our events better.

Thank you, Barb, for all you do at KLT!

Where are you from and where do you live now?

I was born in Brampton, Ontario, raised in Hudson, Quebec, and currently live in Peterborough.

How long have you been a volunteer with Kawartha Land Trust and what types of roles have you had with Kawartha Land Trust?

I was volunteering with KLT before it was KLT*. I have done trail building on the John Earle Chase Memorial Park property, trail maintenance at Christie Bentham Wetland, led hikes, staffed booths, caught and counted bees on Big (Boyd/Chiminis) Island, acted as ambassador at different events, assisted with Passport to Nature and other things.

*Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) was originally known as the Kawartha Heritage Conservancy (KHC)

What is your favourite part of your role at KLT?

Being out in nature and helping others learn more about the importance of forests and how we are all connected to Mother Earth.

Do you have a favourite moment on a KLT property or a specific spot on a KLT property that is special to you?

Working with several hiker friends doing trail maintenance on the Christie Bentham Wetland and then enjoying a picnic after a fun day.

Why does Kawartha Land Trust matter to you?

It is protecting special properties for our grandchildren, making natural corridors for our four-legged friends, and saving wetlands to help cleanse water and reduce flooding.
