You can make a difference for nature in Kawartha Lakes by supporting the protection of a 103-acre property near Four Mile Lake.

Not only will you be protecting vital wildlife habitat against unsustainable development, but you’ll also be contributing to the health of Four Mile Lake for generations to come.

The open cattail marsh and mixed Cedar and Maple swamp on the property are connected to Soap Lake to the north and flows into Four Mile Lake. “Feeder” wetlands such as these are important to maintaining lake water quality. The creek that flows into Four Mile Lake is also documented as a spawning ground for Walleye.

“Last September, I was surprised to learn that 00 Hugill Road was listed for sale,” shares Ian Morton, local resident and volunteer fundraiser for this conservation project.

“This 100+ acre tract includes creeks and wetlands that help supply Four Mile Lake, supports a diversity of birdlife and other fauna, and sits along an escarpment with a mixed hardwood forest in ecological transition. I enjoy walking along its perimeter and am reminded how rare it is to find land of this scale and natural character still intact — especially so close to our lake. Preserving this landscape as a natural legacy is deeply important to me.”

Kawartha Land Trust (KLT), the local land trust serving the Kawarthas for 25 years, submitted an offer to the current owners of the Hugill Road property and the offer was accepted. KLT now needs to raise the remaining amount needed to purchase the property to protect it in perpetuity.

Thanks to members of the local community, over half of the $450,000 needed to protect the 103-acre property has been secured.

We’re already halfway there! With your support, we can reach our goal by the March 31st deadline. Please make a gift today.
