Seed collection is a vital part of supporting the biodiversity and vitality of the natural spaces in the Kawarthas. Join Kawartha Land Trust at KLT’s Ballyduff Trails in the Kawartha Lakes for a early autumn day of seed collection.
You will be introduced to a handful of native grasses and wildflower species that we are going to be collecting seeds from as you wander the property. These seeds will be used to expand Ballyduff’s prairie, bring more diversity to the other KLT properties like Hammer Family Nature Preserve and Big Island, and will be shared with local partner organizations.
What to bring:
- Dress for the weather — we highly recommend closed-toed shoes, long sleeves, and long pants. Poison Ivy and ticks are present on site.
- Water and snacks for yourself and your group.
- Camera (optional, but wow is the prairie ever beautiful this time of year!).
What to expect:
- This is a slow-paced activity; you will be wandering the property on uneven grounds to collect seeds.
- You will be shown what species KLT is collecting.
- Seed collection can sometimes be irritating to the skin (consider wearing long sleeves or gloves).
- There will be signs guiding you where to park and volunteers guiding you to the collection locations on the property.
- There will be an event waiver sent out to you via email that needs to be signed for every member of your group who is participating.
- All ages are welcome — but children under the age of 18 must be supervised by their guardians at all times.
There will be group remarks made at the beginning of the event, but if you wish to just drop in, that is also welcome! When you arrive, please find KLT staff/volunteers in high-visibilty vests to sign you into the event and ensure you have completed the waivers. Once you do this, KLT staff will show you what seeds are being collected.
