The Ston(e)y Lake Family Forest is a testament to what can happen when a community comes together to protect the land they love.

In 2024, a team of dedicated volunteers led a successful fundraising campaign to protect a property adjacent to KLT’s Jeffrey-Cowan Forest Preserve on the north shore of Ston(e)y Lake.

Over three hundred generous individuals and families donated to the summer-long campaign to ensure the permanent protection of 10.5 acres of connected forest habitat – land that will benefit several Species at Risk in the area, including Red-headed Woodpecker, Wood Thrush, and Common Snapping Turtle.

The nature reserve also features 200 metres of natural shoreline along Ston(e)y Lake. Natural shoreline is one of the most iconic and at-risk features in our area, and this particular shoreline was identified as a top priority for conservation through research conducted by KLT and the Environment Council for Clear, Stony, and White Lakes, with the support of the Stony Lake Heritage Foundation, in 2021.

We remain grateful to everyone who contributed to the protection of this property. You made a difference for nature and created a lasting legacy.
